If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway in Southern California, Remington Hot Springs is a hidden gem worth checking out. Located along the scenic Kern River in Sequoia National Forest, these natural hot spring pools offer a peaceful escape into nature.
I recently visited Remington Hot Springs and was impressed by the unique stone masonry of the pools and the beautiful river views.
About Remington Hot Springs
Remington Hot Springs consists of three man-made geothermal pools situated right next to the Kern River. The pools are constructed out of rocks and cement in an elaborate stonework design. Colorful stones and jewelry are embedded into the cement, giving the pools an artistic flair.
The hot spring water emerges from the source at around 105°F and cools to a perfect soaking temperature of 100-103°F as it flows into the pools.
In addition to the main pools, there is a smaller, cooler pool called the Miner’s Tub located about 50 feet above the others. This is the oldest pool at Remington.
The hot springs are clothing optional, although rangers have been known to give tickets for public nudity, so soak at your own risk.
Tips for Visiting Remington Hot Springs
- The springs are very popular, so arrive early in the morning for the best chance of having the pools to yourself. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
- Bring water, snacks, and everything you need for the day, as there are no facilities or amenities at the site. Pack out all your trash to keep the area clean.
- Wear proper footwear for the short but steep hike down to the pools. The trail can be slippery.
- Don’t bring any glass and avoid wearing jewelry, as the sulfur in the water can tarnish silver.
History of Remington Hot Springs
The Kern River area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Tübatulabal people, who used the hot springs for thousands of years. They built villages near the springs and considered them sacred healing sites.
Later during the California Gold Rush in the 1800s, miners also made use of the hot springs. The ruins of some of their settlements can still be found nearby.
In the early 1990s, a group of local volunteers constructed the cement tubs that exist today, using rocks from the surrounding area.
Their goal was to make the springs more accessible while still preserving the natural environment as much as possible. The volunteers, who call themselves the “Kern River Hot Springs Angels”, continue to maintain the pools to this day.
